ABSTRACT |
I participated in the panel discussion (workshop) titled “The Creation and Transformation of Traditional Japanese Poetry Around the World” on the second day of the “East Asia and Contemporary Japanese-language Literature Forum,” which was held from October 25 to 27, 2019, at the National Chengchi University and Soochow University in Taipei. Although my two-day trip was short, taking part in this forum was a great experience. The panel discussion was arranged and hosted by Professor Byeongho Jung, the director of the Global Institute for Japanese Studies of Korea University, who is a friend of mine. It was a highly exceptional event where researchers from regions around the world gathered to share their research findings on the theme of “The Reception and Transformation of Traditional Japanese Haiku in East Asian and European Countries from the late 19th Century to the Present.” As a result, the event offered a glimpse of future directions for the field. This forum gave me an opportunity to visit Taiwan for the first time in 20 years, and was a valuable gathering that had numerous implications for the future of East Asia, as well as providing hopeful paths forward. |
