ABSTRACT
Japanese Literature was a quarterly magazine that was launched in 1982, which had a total of 26 issues published before its closure in 1988. Based on an expansive understanding of Realism and the goal of emancipating the mind, the magazine published Chinese translations of the work of a group of Japanese writers who had been long marginalized. In this way, it promoted diversity in the field of literature. However, its Pan-Realism suffered from the defect of tending to cause misunderstandings of texts, which undermined the magazine’s mission. There were also management problems, all of which led the magazine to the hasty choice of lowering its standards and consequently to its ultimate fate, that of failure.
