ABSTRACT
To this point there have not been many studies on the Taiwanese short poems (tanka) written during the Japanese Occupation. In this study we focus on two pieces of research from 1927 and 1944, and verify the information provided in them. Our findings suggest that unless more attention is paid to the legacy of the field of poetry in Taiwan, the multidimensionality of Taiwanese literary work will likely be unappreciated. Moreover, if high quality translations, imbued with a rich understanding of the body of work in this field, are not carried out, many researchers of Taiwanese poetry who are not proficient in Japanese may produce misguided work.
